'Portrait of the Whole Person': Opening Reception for Student Artwork at the Montlake Branch Dec.11

Bertschi School's fourth-grade students and Disability Rights Washington will host an opening reception for the student art exhibit "Portrait of the Whole Person" from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11 at the Montlake Branch, 2401 24th Ave. E., 206-684-4720. Come view the art and meet the student artists!
The reception is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Free parking is available in the branch parking lot and garage. The exhibit will be on display from Dec. 11 through early January.
In preparation for this art show, fourth-grade students at the Bertschi School have learned about disability history and culture, read biographies about individuals with disabilities and developed art skills in portraiture.
"Through this art show, we hope to heighten awareness of the disability rights movement and culture with the broader community," said Stacie Siebrecht, associate director of legal advocacy for Disability Rights Washington. "By educating youth, we can revise negative stereotypes and perceptions about disabled individuals that can easily lead to exclusion, bullying, low self-esteem and discrimination."
The Portrait of the Whole Person project provides an integrated approach to teaching youth to perceive disability as a reflection of societal views, treat people with disabilities with respect and dignity and understand how disability rights fit into the broader civil rights movement.
