Art, Film, Theater and Music: Previews and Performances at The Seattle Public Library in January

The Seattle Public Library will host opera previews, film screenings, concerts and more at several locations throughout the city in January.

Seattle Opera Preview Lecture: Eugene Onegin - 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 at the Northeast Branch, 6801 35th Ave. N.E., 206-684-7539. Join Theodore Deacon for a preview lecture of Verdi’s Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin". Tchaikovsky’s lush and lyrical music includes show-stopping ballroom dances, tense confrontations, blissful duets, forlorn farewells, and of course Tatyana’s tour-de-force “Letter Aria.” A sophisticated and melancholy masterpiece by one of classical music’s most universally beloved composers.
Ladies Musical Club Concert - Noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Join us for a Ladies Musical Club concert featuring vocal works by Handel & Rebecca Clarke as well as piano works for four hands. Performers will include: Dawn Padula, mezzo-soprano; and Joan Lundquist, Risa Jun, and Yelena Balabanova (guest artist), piano.
Ladies Musical Club Concert - 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12 at the West Seattle Branch, 2306 42nd Ave. S.W., 206-684-7444. Join us for a 20th century song recital with music by Edvard Grieg, Gian Carlo Menotti, Kurt Weill and Benjamin Britten. Performers will include: Molly Tomlinson, soprano; Ann Rackl, violin; and Selena Chu, piano.
Seattle Philharmonic Preview - Noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Music Director Adam Stern provides a delightful preview of the Philharmonic's upcoming concert "Legendary Women," which will feature the U.S. premieres of Mel Bonis' "Le Songe de Cléopâtre" and Ruth Gipps' Symphony #4, as well as Beethoven's Leonore Overture #3. The preview will feature live piano music.
Scarecrow Video - 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26 at the Ballard Branch, 5614 22nd Ave. N.W., 206-684-4089. Scarecrow Video presents a screening of "La La Land" (2016), winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Director. A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair. Directed by Damien Chazelle, and stars Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and Rosemarie DeWitt. This is the first film in our three-part "Musicals" movie series.
Movies at the Central Library – 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 4, Howard S. Wright Family & Janet W. Ketcham Meeting Room 2, 206-386-4636. Join us for a screening of "True Smile: An Autistic Man and his Brother Bike Through Spain" (2015). Sergio, a blind autistic young man, undertakes an extraordinary 1,300 kilometer journey with his brother. Over 30 days, they traverse desert and high mountains by tandem bike, starting in central Spain and finishing in one of the most remote villages in Morocco's Atlas Mountains.
The Seattle Times presents Pictures of the Year - 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Take a closer look at events from the past year that helped shape the Pacific Northwest region. Award-winning staff from The Seattle Times will present a slideshow of photographs from 2019 and discuss the story behind each image.
