Upcoming author readings and community dialogues hosted by The Seattle Public Library

Attend author events, book discussions, community dialogues, expert conversations and literary programs from the comfort of your own living room this winter. The Seattle Public Library has a wide variety of online author programs coming up, including three events with authors who won a 2021 Washington State Book Award.

READING & DISCUSSION SCHEDULE
- 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19 - Washington State Book Awards: Jess Walter Discusses 'The Cold Millions': Winner of the 2021 Washington State Book Award for Fiction, “The Cold Millions” is an intimate story of brotherhood, love, sacrifice, workers' rights, and betrayal set against the panoramic backdrop of an early 20th century America that eerily echoes our own time. Walter will be interviewed by librarian and former Washington State Book Award judge Sheri Boggs (of the Spokane County Library District) for this Washington Center for the Book event.
- 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 26 - Washington State Book Awards: Clyde W. Ford Discusses 'Think Black': Clyde W. Ford, winner of the 2021 Washington State Book Award for Creative Nonfiction, discusses "Think Black" in this Washington Center for the Book event. "Think Black" is "an engrossing story of how racist experiences of a Black father and son working at IBM had roots in a corporate mentality that lent support to the Nazism, Eugenics, and Apartheid."
- 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29 - Fantastic Intersections: Speculative Fiction and Romance: Join us for an online discussion moderated by Rashida J. Smith with S. A. (Austin) Chant, KJ Charles, Zen Cho, L. Penelope, and C. L. Polk. From the sublime and magical to the stirring and steamy, storylines centering BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ characters are flourishing in the romance and speculative genres. We’ll tackle the nuance of building romance into the plot vs. romance as the plot, the role of the happily-ever-after or happy-for-now in representation, and the future of the fantastic in romance.
- 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2 - Washington State Book Awards: Jennifer Haupt: Hear selections from writers who contributed to “Alone Together: Love, Grief, and Comfort in the Time of COVID-19,” which was edited by Jennifer Haupt. Winner of the 2021 Washington State Book Award for General Nonfiction, “Alone Together” includes essays, poems, and interviews from writers including Kwame Alexander, Jenna Blum, Andre Dubus III, Jamie Ford, Nikki Giovanni, Pam Houston, Jean Kwok, Major Jackson, Caroline Leavitt, Ada Limón, Dani Shapiro, David Sheff, Garth Stein, Luis Alberto Urrea, Steve Yarbrough, and Lidia Yuknavitch.
