History Café: Learn About Local History This Fall

Every third Wednesday of the month, The Seattle Public Library co-presents a series of evening presentations and panel discussions on Seattle and Pacific Northwest history at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), 860 Terry Ave N., in the museum's Compass Café.
Library events and programs are free and open to the public. Registration is not required. Dates, times and locations for upcoming History Café events are as follows:
6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 - Living with the Ship Canal: The Environmental and Cultural. Enjoy a panel discussion about the immediate, dramatic changes that happened when Lake Washington and Puget Sound were connected. Learn how this re-plumbed the Seattle area's watershed and the long-term impact the changes have had on the local environment and people. Jennifer Ott, author and HistoryLink historian, will moderate.
6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18 - Woodland: The Story of the Animals and People of Woodland Park Zoo. Follow the history of Woodland Park Zoo from its 19th century beginnings as a park, originally carved from the wilderness north of downtown Seattle, to its recent role as an international pioneer in zoo design. John Bierlein, author of HistoryLink's new book "Woodland: The Story of the Animals and People of Woodland Park Zoo," will explore changing ideas about the relationship between humans and animals and give a fond look at the zoo's animals and the people who care for them.
