Join The Seattle Public Library through Nov. 10 as we explore the history of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and the variety of ways it’s celebrated around the world.

Create a calaverita

Local artist Amaranta Sandys has created a bilingual, intergenerational art tutorial video for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Follow along, learn and create as she shares the history of of Día de los Muertos celebrations and festivities around Mexico and the rest of the world while she shows us how to makes a decorative, mixed-media calaverita (skull). You can pick up take-and-make art supply kits for your own calaverita at the South Park Branch (8604 Eighth Ave. S.), available while supplies last.

We invite you to share your Día de los Muertos artwork on social media with the hashtages #SPLDayoftheDead and #SPLDiadelosMuertos.

Remembering loved ones

Visit the Beacon Hill Branch for an interactive bulletin board display in the children’s area about the Day of the Dead. You can write the name of family and friends who have passed away, or a favorite activity you did together, on a colorful flower and add it to the display.
