The Seattle Public Library will host musical preview lectures, art showcases, film screenings and concerts at several locations throughout the city in September.


Frances Walton Competition Winners Concert - Noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 1, Microsoft Auditorium, 206-386-4636. Enjoy a free concert featuring two winners of the 2019 Frances Walton Competition sponsored by the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle. Pianist Minsun Kim and clarinetist Ling (Holly) Hang will display the extraordinary musical skills that helped them win the prestigious Frances Walton Competition. Collaborative pianist Asta Vaicekonis will join Hang for some of her pieces.

Movies at the Central Library - 2:30 p.m. to 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Central Library, 1000 Fourth Ave., Level 4, Howard S. Wright Family & Janet W. Ketcham Meeting Room 2, 206-386-4636. Join us for a screening of "Finding Kukan" (2016). "Kukan" was a landmark color film that revealed the atrocities of World War II China to audiences around the world.  It was the first-ever American feature documentary to receive an Academy Award in 1942 and was considered lost for decades. When filmmaker Robin Lung discovers a badly damaged film print of "Kukan," she pieces together the inspirational tale of the two renegades behind the making of it — Chinese-American playwright Li Ling-Ai and cameraman Rey Scott.

Concert: PlayBack Showcase - 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27 at the Clock-Out Lounge, 4864 Beacon Ave. S. Join us for a free concert featuring four Playback bands: Tres Leches, Dark Smith, Specswizard, and Black Ends. For ages 21 and up with valid ID. 

Scarecrow Video 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at the Ballard Branch, 5614 22nd Ave. N.W., 206-684-4089. Scarecrow Video presents a screening of the film "Woman on the Run" (1950), a crime film noir about Frank Johnson, who flees police after becoming an eyewitness to a murder. His wife, a reporter, the police and the murderer pursue him around scenic San Francisco. Directed by Norman Foster and starring Ann Sheridan, Dennis O’Keefe and Robert Keith, this is the first film in our four-part "Women in Noir" movie series.
